Myrtle Beach: Slightly Off the Beaten Path

The Beach and So Much More!

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is probably best known for 3 things - abundant golf courses, shop till you drop outlet malls , and, of course, the beach - also known as The Grand Strand. However, if you've ever longed to get away from the never - ending throngs of tourists and see something a little different, there are several options available.

One of my favorite places is Brookgreen Gardens which is only about 25 - 30 mnutes away. Absolutely beautiful landscaped gardens, gorgeous statues, and plenty of shady trails make for a quiet, relaxing escape from the nearby hub-hub. Boat rides, walking tours, and several dining options are also available. Special programs and exhibits are offered throughout the year.

A few minutes down the road from Brookgreen is Huntington Beach State Park. This park is hands down my favorite stretch of beach on the strand. No high rises are anywhere to be seen - just a quiet stretch of beach and sand dunes. There is even an old castle on the property which was the former home of the original owners. Camping and hiking options are onsite too.

Maybe you need a little " me time" while on vacation and want to treat yourself to a little pampering! Well, you're in luck as there are quite a few spas in the area, however, my favorite massage therapist is Anna Staples - a holisitic practioner who really knows how to help rid you of all those knots and kinks that stress can give you. She also does facials too!. If you're more into manis and pedis, I would recommend Dolce Lusso Salon and Day Spa - their pedicures are heavenly.

These are just a few of my favorites. Next time you come down for a visit, try one or two for a little something different.

Great pictures of Brookgreen Gardens! I love going there whenever we stay at Huntington Beach State Park.
